Three numbers decide what a plan costs
We put them side by side for every plan, from the files insurers submit to CMS.
Premium
What you pay to have the plan, used or not. For Medicare Advantage it comes on top of the Part B premium (this year’s Medicare costs).
Deductible
What you pay for care before the plan starts sharing costs. A low premium often comes with a high deductible; our break-even calculator shows when that trade pays off.
Out-of-pocket maximum
The most you pay for covered in-network care in a year. Premium plus this number is your bad-year cost, and it’s the first thing our rankings sort by (methodology).

Health plan FAQ
How do you rank Medicare Advantage plans?
By the most a plan can cost you in a year for covered in-network care: twelve months of premiums, less any Part B giveback the plan pays back, plus the in-network out-of-pocket maximum. Lower is better; ties go to the lower premium. CMS star ratings are shown alongside for context but don’t change the order. Full methodology.
Is this the same as Medicare’s Plan Finder?
No. We rank on the costs every member faces, from the CMS plan files. The official Medicare Plan Finder can also price your own prescriptions and check your doctors’ networks, so use it to confirm a plan before you enroll.
When can I change my Medicare plan?
During Medicare Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, you can switch Advantage or Part D plans for coverage starting January 1. If you’re in an Advantage plan, you get one more change from January 1 to March 31. All enrollment periods.
Do insurers pay you to rank their plans?
No. Every plan is ranked by the same cost math, and no insurer can pay to be included or to rank higher. We never ask for your name or phone number. How we’re funded.
